EDUCATION

Of the major objectives of MOVE is to provide essential services, such as education and healthcare, to under-privileged communities. MOVE pays particular attention to quality of and affordability for low-income families, while designing and providing these services.

Setting Up Schools in Under-Privileged Communities

In partnership with Women’s Literacy Drive Organization (WLDO), headed by Ms Shameem Bilgrami, MOVE is running 4 schools in some of the poorest slums of Karachi. These schools, which are located in Mangophir and Nusrat Bhutto colony, cater to over 500 students, with a large proportion of female enrollment. They provide education up to the matriculation (10th grade) level. In these schools, MOVE pays particular attention to the training of teachers and the teaching tools and techniques used. Our financial resources are primarily deployed in these two areas to ensure that students receive a high quality of education.

The objectives of these schools are:

To provide education that “fosters an open mind and develops a sense of civic responsibility”

To provide employment opportunities to young girls from the communities, who are educated to the Intermediate or Bachelor level, by training them to become teachers

To use these schools as “civic centers” by organizing a monthly meeting of the mothers of the students to discuss community and personal issues

The infrastructure of the existing schools is also used to provide technical and vocational training in many different skills for both men and women from the community.

HEALTHCARE SERVICES

MOVE Diabetic and Medical Center

MOVE is implementing a program to create a Diabetic and Medical Center (DMC) in partnership with Anjuman-e-Ahbab Society (AAS). The project is managed by Mr Viqar Siddiqui, a social entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience in the healthcare sector.

The DMC will:

Provide good-quality healthcare services at affordable prices to low-income families

Concentrate on encouraging a culture of preventive healthcare and early diagnosis and treatment by setting up satellite Collection Centres (CCs) in under-privileged communities, which will bring healthcare services to the doorstep of the poor

Reduce unemployment by providing jobs to many trained doctors, lab technicians, nurses, and others over time

Focus on a clearly under-served area, i.e. providing medical services to under-privileged communities at affordable prices

The DMC will be located on a 4,800 sq. feet plot in North Nazimabad, Karachi. This piece of land and associated buildings have been made available by AAS at no cost to MOVE.
